Test of English Proficiency in South Korea

The Test of English Proficiency or TEPS, created and managed by the Seoul National University’s language Education Institute, is an English proficiency test to assess South Korean applicants English language skills. TEPS was conducted all over the country since January 1999.

Usage of TEPS

TEPS scores are used for admissions in many of the Educational Institutions in South Korea. Also, it is used for work-related purposes as well.

Structure of TEPS

The TEPS comprises of 4 parts- Listening Comprehension, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Grammar.
  • Total No. of questions: 200 questions
  • Duration:  2 hours and 20 minutes
  • Total Points: 990
Listening: The listening part has 4 sub-sections. Section 1-3 comprises of conversations and discussions, while Section 4 comprises of brief monologues in the form of lectures, announcements, advertisements and so on. The questions in this part are based on several daily circumstances and topics. Applicants are required to listen to the audio and answer questions based on it.

  • Duration: 55 minutes
  • Total Points: 400 
Grammar: This part of the test requires the applicant to make use of the grammar knowledge and skills in everyday situations.  This part bears a time restriction of 30 seconds per question. The questions are like select the option to fill the blank in a statement or conversation, identify the grammatical error in the passage or conversation.  
  • No. of questions: 50
  • Duration: 25 minutes
  • Total Points: 100
Vocabulary: This part assesses the applicant’s ability to use vocabulary in realistic situations.  This part makes use of many items that assesses the applicant’s knowledge to differentiate between synonyms and related words, draw connections and comparisons, and so on. 
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • No. of questions: 50
  • Total points: 100
Reading: This part consists of a reading comprehension that is related to day-to-day environment or academic or professional background. The applicant is given 1 minute to read short passages, and based on the reading he/she has to answer few questions. The passages include a wide range of topics.
  • No. of questions: 40 
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Total points: 400

Scoring and Results

 Scores are given on a scale of 990 points. The TEPS uses the IRT-Item Response Theory Scoring mechanism to assess the language proficiency of the applicants. IRT is a probability theory that assesses competency based on the applicant’s responses and the difficulty level of the questions. Accurate and correct response will yield high scores. 

A score report is given to the applicants, which include total score and level, along with sectional percentage points.
